Multi-Activity Event Planning Guide

This guide is a planning tool to help plan larger, complex events that include a number of different activities. Its intent is to help ensure that all parts of the event are Safe Guide compliant. It is not intended for use by a Unit Guider planning a weekend camp or even a one-off backcountry trip.

Review Multi-Activity Event Planning Guide at the very start of the planning process, using it to guide the discussions. Going through the guide will give you an overview of what needs to be included in your plan.

The administration of the Multi-Activity Event is the responsibility of the sponsoring council and must be consistent with the province's current administrative process.

Any council, committee, or team planning this type of event should contact their Provincial Safe Guide Assessor (PSGA) early in the planning as the PSGA is the person who will provide guidance to the process. (Note: in the case of national level events, this contact will be the National Safe Guide Specialist).

This guide is a tool that identifies to whom responsibility is delegated for all aspects of an event and aids in the coordination of the delegation of those responsibilities. An example would be a large provincial or national event where the base camp would be assessed as Yellow level but the out trips (backpacking, trail-riding on horseback and canoe tripping) would be assessed at the Red level. Or on a smaller scale, while a local event may be Green or Yellow overall (e.g. an end-of-year celebration), it may include Red level activities (e.g., zip lining).

It is strongly suggested that any council that is considering planning a large complex event connect with their PSGA as soon as possible - ideally as soon as the event gains "traction" and before any detailed planning begins.
